Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment
Approximately 16 percent of wound care patients benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT). HBOT is an adjunctive treatment in which a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at two and one half times normal atmospheric pressure. As a result, the blood carries 15-20 times the normal amount of oxygen to organs and tissues. This enables the body's natural healing mechanisms, which are dependent upon oxygen, to function more efficiently, promoting quicker healing.
The BARA-MED XD hyperbaric oxygen chamber system offers smooth-ride technology, reducing ear pain often associated with hyperbaric treatment. BARA-MED XD's larger chamber and specially designed lift can accomodate patients weighing up to 700 pounds and those who use wheelchairs. HBOT therapy is usually administered two hours a day, five days a week, for up to two months. HBOT indications currently approved and reimbursed by Medicare, HMOs and other insurance carriers are:
- Diabetic ulcer of the lower extremities
- Soft tissue radionecrosis
- Actinomycosis
- Preservation of compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
- Crush injury/acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Progressive necrotizing infections (necrotizing fasciitis)
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
- Osteoradionecrosis
