The St. Francis Wellness Center offers exercise programs for adults of all ages. We are located at our Park Campus on 16th Avenue. We offer several different classes for participants at all levels of fitness.
Initial Conditioning Class
This 45 minute class focuses on establishing the muscular strength, endurance and mobility of individuals for the successful accomplishment of activities of daily living (ADLs). It promotes improvements in posture, body mechanics, balance and stability. The purpose of the class is to help preserve and enhance muscular fitness in senior individuals, which in turn may help to prevent falls, improve mobility and counteract muscle weakness and frailty.
Improvement Class
This 45 minute class is designed for all apparently healthy adults who follow the recommended rate of progression in an exercise conditioning program. Successful accomplishment depends on assessments of functional capacity, medical and health status, age, individual activity preferences and goals, and an individual’s tolerance to the current level of training. The goal of this class is to provide a gradual increase in the overall exercise stimulus to allow for significant improvements in cardio-respiratory fitness, musculo-skeletal function, development and maintenance of muscular strength and muscle mass, increases in bone mass and in strength connective tissue, along with flexibility particularly in the lower back and posterior thigh regions.
Introduction to Aerobics (starting in May 2009)
This 30 minute class is designed to develop and improve cardiorespiratory fitness. The American College of Sports Medicine defines aerobic exercise as “any activity that uses large muscle groups, can be maintained continuously, and is rhythmic in nature.” This class is an introduction to aerobics and is defined as low-impact, in which at least one foot remains in contact with the ground at all times. This class is designed to condition the heart and lungs by increasing the oxygen available in the body and by enabling the heart to use oxygen more efficiently. In addition to cardiovascular improvements there are many other benefits of aerobic activity. These benefits may include decreased body fat (in conjunction with proper diet and strength training), increased resistance to fatigue, improved energy levels, decreased tension, aid in sleeping, increased general stamina, improvements in mood and can reduced depression and anxiety.
