Many theological schools and seminaries grant academic credit for CPE. You should contact them directly for this information. They may require a letter of confirmation or other documentation from our center to show your completion of a unit of CPE.

What are the different types of CPE?

ACPE offers Level I and Level II CPE, as well as Supervisory CPE, in sequence. The outcomes for each level must be completed before moving to the next level.

St. Francis offers Level I & II CPE in the following way:

  1. A Residency Program - year-long (3 units consecutively)
  2. Internship Programs (single units) :-
     Summer Unit - 12 weeks full-time
     Extended Spring/Fall Units - 18-22 weeks part-time

*See Program Schedule on this website.

The Extended program is 18 to 22 weeks long constituting a part-time unit of CPE that is required to total 400 hours per unit. Seminars add up to 100 hours and visitation (clinical)adds up to 300 hours with patients and family. The learning group meets once a week for seminars. Extended CPE students participate in the on-call rotation once a week on the weekday from 4:30pm to 8.30am the next morning. Once a month on the weekend on-call may include a  24 hour period. On-call does not count toward your clinical hours.

Part-time units (extended spring & fall) allow students to keep their present employment.

Can I get CPE credit for previous work experience?

No. ACPE credit is not granted for previous work experience. However, your previous ministry or related experience will be considered during your application process.

One previous unit of CPE makes you eligible to apply for a residency.

I want to be a chaplain or a pastoral counselor. Do I need CPE?

The Association of Professional Chaplains (www.professionalchaplains.org), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (www.nacc.org) and the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (www.najc.org) and other organizations certify chaplains.

The American Association of Pastoral Counselors (www.aapc.org) certifies pastoral counselors. Some CPE is required as a prerequisite. You should contact these organizations directly about their requirements.

Can I do CPE online or through some other distance learning process?
